Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders
The Zeta Iota Zeta Educational Foundation provides opportunities for students of today to become future leaders. Through the generosity of many brothers, we have awarded scholarships and funded educational programs over several decades.
Each year our Scholarship Committee solicits and reviews applications from chapter members. Funds are available from endowed funds, resulting in multiple scholarships being available. This allows our chapter to remain diverse by supporting some members that might not otherwise be able to remain at KU.
We have an opportunity to expand upon these efforts by supporting the establishment of a permanent home for the members of the chapter. Working with the House Corporation Board we have identified elements of the new house that would be dedicated for study and educational purposes. This allows for specific grants from the Foundation to used for those identified areas.
Your contributions to the Foundation will help us to continue with these efforts, strengthening the chapter and ensuring the development of community-minded leaders for tomorrow. Thank you for your support.

Scholarship Awards
The Educational Foundation’s Scholarship Committee awards annual scholarships on behalf of two endowed funds. The William Bradford Shierk Memorial Fund is held by the KU Endowment Association in memory of Brother Shierk, ZI 426. The Fleming Scholarship Fund was created by Brother Jim Fleming, ZI 9, and his wife Mary. Those funds are held by the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation.
The principal of each of those endowments are held and professionally invested by the respective organizations. The investment proceeds provide approximately $5000 in annual scholarships to the active chapter, awarded based upon individual need, grade performance and activities.
If you have an interest in providing funds for scholarships, or to establish an endowment, contact us: zetaiotafoundation@gmail.com.
Making Charitable Contributions to the Educational Foundation
The Zeta Iota Zeta Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides scholarships and supports the educational areas of the new Chapter House. Here are options for supporting the project that may provide tax-deductible contribution for you. As always, consult your own tax advisor to ensure you maximize your benefits while contributing within IRS guidelines:
Send Money to the Educational Foundation – Current year tax deductions for up to 60% of your Adjusted Gross Income are available to those that itemize on their tax returns. If you do not have aggregate itemized expenses (State and local taxes, mortgage interest, total contributions) that exceed the standard deduction, this option may not result in benefits to you. Alternatively, if your total contributions to charities exceeds the 50% of AGI limit, the excess amount can be carried over for up to 4 years for potential deductions.
•Cash – Send via Zelle to zetaiotafoundation@gmail.com and the Educational Foundation receives the full amount
•Check – Mail to: Zeta Iota Zeta Educational Foundation
PO Box 13129
Overland Park, KS 66282
•PayPal – You may send funds via PayPal, although PayPal retains a small processing fee
Contribute Appreciated Assets – By transferring stocks, ETFs, etc. from your personal account to the Educational Foundation to you be eligible to a tax-deductible for the full current value of asset without having to recognize a gain on the increased value of the stock, etc. In this case the current year tax-deductible is limited to 30% of you Adjusted Gross Income, although any unused amount due to this limit can carryover for future deductions for 4 years, subject to the same limitation each year. To make this type of contribution you will need a form from your brokerage firm and Educational Foundation account information, so reach out to Educational Foundation President Richard Winter at richardrwinter@gmail.com for assistance.
Make an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution – There are options to contribute from you IRA which may be tax-advantageous, subject to certain requirements and restrictions. This option is available to IRA owners who are age 70½ or older but is limited to $100,000 per year. The distribution is excluded from your gross income, and it counts towards your required minimum distribution (RMD) if you're over 73. The distribution must be made directly by the IRA trustee to the Educational Foundation account and you must be certain to indicate that there are no withholdings for Federal or State taxes. Since you are avoiding taxes in this process QCDs are not deductible as charitable contributions. We can provide example forms and assist with a QCD, if interested.
